Memorial Day Happenings Near You
Memorial Day is just around the corner. This important day is marked by remembering servicemembers who lost their lives while defending our country. Communities across the United States hold parades and ceremonies in honor of fallen soldiers and civilians. Given that it is a national holiday, Memorial Day weekend has also become an opportunity to spend time with family and friends.
So, what is happening in Brooklyn and around the city this Memorial Day Weekend?
- Brooklyn Memorial Parade – The annual parade begins on Third Avenue and 78th Street at 11:00 AM. The march ends at John Paul Jones Park, where there will be a memorial service including a flag raising, bagpipes, wreath laying, 21-gun salute, and more. This is year marks the 156th Memorial Day Parade in Brooklyn, and it is one of the borough’s oldest parades.
- Fleet Week – Visit naval ships on May 25-29 (except Sunday) at one of the following tour locations: Manhattan Pier 88 North & South, Manhattan Pier 90 North, Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum Pier 86, and Staten Island Homeport Pier.
- Trolley Tours – Join historian Jeff Richman’s trolley tour on Saturday, May 27, and learn about the experiences of some World War II veterans who are buried in Green-Wood Cemetery.
- Outdoor Movie Screenings – The Intrepid Sea, Air, & Space Museum is hosting movies all summer long at sunset on the flight deck in honor of the 80th anniversary of the ship’s commissioning. A special Memorial Day weekend screening features Top Gun on Friday, May 26.
