Socrates Sculpture Park Announces New Executive Director
Socrates Sculpture Park recently announced the appointment of its new executive director, John Hatfield. He will take the position in Long Island City on January 18th, after having served seventeen years at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in Manhattan. Hatfield has been the Deputy Director since 2008, and has held several other positions there since 1992. Before Hatfield, the Socrates Sculpture Park position was held by Alyson Baker for eleven years.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am delighted to announce our selection of John Hatfield as the new director of Socrates Sculpture Park. His insightful leadership and passion for artists, as proven by his accomplishments at The New Museum, is exactly what we need to uphold Socrates’ extraordinary legacy and to guide the organization through its next developmental phase” Board President Stuart Match Suna said.
Socrates Founder and Board Chairman Mark di Suvero added: “We are thrilled to have John Hatfield join the outer space-time visionary world of Socrates–a miraculous artspace that has changed a Queen’s neighborhood.”
Hatfield has impressive experience in the field. Through his role as Deputy Director of the New Museum, he has dealt with the development and execution of short and long range strategic planning, overseeing expansion of growth of staff, earning revenue sources, operations, digital resources, finances and programming. He has worked first hand with hundreds of artists and curators, as well as initiated a digital archive and headed numerous projects.
