Rachel Kneebone Meets Rodin at the Brooklyn Museum

A unique exhibit is now showing at the Brooklyn Museum through August 12, 2012. Sculpture aficionados will be intrigued by the juxtaposition of 15 of August Rodin’s most famous works from the Brooklyn Museum’s own collection with the work of Rachel Kneebone, the well-known British artist.

Kneebone selected the Rodin pieces herself to sit alongside eight of her own large-format porcelain sculptures in what is her first major museum appearance. Here is a description of what visitors to the exhibit can expect to see:

“The exhibition will highlight the artists’ shared interest in the representation of mourning, ecstasy, death, and vitality in figurative sculpture. The pairing also offers a visual comparison of the two sculptors’ materials and processes. Kneebone’s intricately wrought artworks, simultaneously pristine and agitated contain allusions to Michelangelo, Gianlorenzo Bernini, and Louise Bourgeois. Integrating recognizable human forms with odd mutations, they provide a stark contrast to Rodin’s dark, more-concrete, yet equally animated bronzes.”

Catherine Morris, the curator of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art organized the exhibit Rachel Kneebone: Regarding Rodin.
