American King of the NBA and the British Royals to Rendezvous in Brooklyn
The British are coming…to Brooklyn next month. For the first time as a royal couple, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine (née Kate Middleton) will be visiting New York City. During their three-day visit on December 7-9 they are planning to catch a basketball game at Barclay’s Center, while the Brooklyn Nets are hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers with the King of the NBA, LeBron James.
“How befitting for the future King of England to travel to Kings County!” said Borough President Eric Adams. “We look forward to welcoming Prince William and Duchess Kate as they enjoy our Brooklyn Nets ‘dethroning’ King James and the Cavaliers.”
George, the royal couple’s 16-month old son, will not be along for the trip. Kate is expecting her second child in April. This visit is their first to the United States since then visited California in 2011 and their first to New York since they married.
Kate will also accompany New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray to a child development center on December 8.
McCray, who is a poet and political figure in her own right, tweeted about the upcoming visit:
“Appreciate that The Duchess of Cambridge will highlight the importance of mental health by touring a NYC child development facility.”
When asked about the upcoming royal stay, the mayor seemed a bit taken aback:
“I believe they’re going to be visiting New York City” Mayor de Blasio said. “I think that’s a great thing. I think from everything I’ve seen, they seem like very good and charitable people.”
Also on the itinerary is a stop at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum on Day 1. They will remember the 67 British nationals that were killed during the infamous attack of 2001. They will also be visiting the newly opened 1 World Trade Center, and later be feted at a private event held by the American Friends of the Royals Foundation. While Kate is gallivanting around with McCray, William will go to Washington DC for a meeting about wildlife conservation. That same day Kate will attend a luncheon in her honor at the British Consul General. That evening the Prince and Duchess will re-unite to go to the Nets vs Cavaliers game at Barclay’s.
The last day in the US will be spent at a city youth organization to begin, and will end with a gala dinner held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The dinner will be celebrating the 600th anniversary of the University of St. Andrews, the oldest university in Scotland.
