Charter Schools Showing Results

The Center for Research on Education Outcomes at Stanford University just found in a recent study that New York City’s charter schools are boosting reading and math scores far more than are regular public schools.   They looked at 49 charter schools and evaluated data from 2003 through 2009.

The study found that, while 33% of the charter schools performed in a similar fashion to regular public schools in math, 51% of the charters boosted match scores on state tests more than the public schools did.   Only 16% of the charter schools showed less growth, when compared with the public school test results.   In reading, 59% of the schools performed similarly, while 29% of the charters showed improved scores over the public schools and 12% of the charters showed less gains.

Even more impressive, according to the study, is that Black and Hispanic charter school students showed the most significant gains in reading and math, as compared to their counterparts in public schools.
