Brooklyn’s Arts Scene Takes Center Stage
It’s time to celebrate Brooklyn’s vibrant arts scene at the Downtown Brooklyn Arts Festival (DBAF) on September 27-28! This two-day extravaganza showcases our borough’s creative spirit, featuring an exciting lineup of performances and collaborations at The Plaza at 300 Ashland and other local venues.
The festival kicks off Friday evening with a party featuring DJ Spinna, DJ K.Tea, and Grammy winner Dawn Tallman. Dance group Nutribe will collaborate with Mark Morris Dance Group, exploring a number of dance styles originating in the Black American community. Literary enthusiasts can enjoy a James Baldwin centennial celebration at the Center for Fiction, featuring contemporary authors discussing women in his stories.
Saturday’s events include interactive art installations, Afro-Caribbean rhythm workshops, and music performances by local artists like GhettoFalsetto and Natie Music who is known for her unique combination of Kréol Soul, jazz, and hip hop. The festivities conclude with a set by father-son DJ duo St. James Joy whose impromptu music sessions evolved into regular block parties for those cheering local frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. They will be followed by #SampleSaleMusic in partnership with The Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA).
Most events are free and open to the public. While not all activities may be specifically designed for children, the diverse range of performances and interactive elements offers opportunities for families to experience Brooklyn’s vibrant arts scene together.
